Research project

DepoCarb - Stabilisation of slag landfills through carbonation

In cooperation with waste incineration plants and landfill operators, field tests are being carried out on the ‘artificial’ carbonation of MSWI slag. This achieves a chemically inert state (‘earth crust quality’) of the slag, so that heavy metal emissions discharged with the landfill leachate are reduced or prevented in the long term.

A slag landfill is not chemically ‘inert’ in the long term, but its contents change, which means that pollutants can enter the leachate in the long term. The primary objective of the DepoCarb project is to inertise the contents of slag landfills through forced, artificial carbonation in such a way that the measures for aftercare can be significantly reduced and, in the best case, completely discontinued. Carbonation fixes the water-soluble Ca(OH)2 present in the landfill as water-insoluble CaCO3, so that the alkalinity potential remains in the landfill body in the long term. In addition, many heavy metals not only form poorly soluble hydroxides at high pH, but also poorly soluble carbonates at intermediate pH.
