The Mechatronics Program

Mechatronics, with its interdisciplinary expertise in mechanical engineering, electronics, and computer science, is an essential tool in modern industries. It forms the foundation for many innovative technologies, as well as intelligent technical products and processes. In a highly technological world, mechatronics engineers ensure the development of sophisticated products and the smooth operation of processes.

In the Mechatronics program, you will build the necessary mathematical and scientific foundations, along with core competencies in the three traditional engineering disciplines: mechanical engineering, electronics, and computer science.

Focus on one of our three specializations and enhance your expertise with future-oriented topics relevant to the industry.  This highly practice-oriented program takes full advantage of the excellent laboratory facilities at the two campuses in Buchs and St. Gallen and maintains strong connections with companies in eastern Switzerland and beyond.

You will also benefit from an outstanding student-to-faculty ratio, ensuring personalized support throughout your studies.

Advantages of a Bachelor in Mechatronics at OST

  • Interdisciplinarity: The Bachelor’s program in Mechatronics combines mechanics, electronics, computer science, and artificial intelligence, providing a deep understanding of complex systems.
  • Practical Orientation: Classroom learning is directly applied in practice, such as in the REAL project, where student teams bring their own ideas to life over five semesters.
  • High Flexibility: With three specialization areas and three future-oriented topics, the program can be tailored to your interests. Study full-time or part-time, with options for daytime or evening classes.
  • Two Locations: Mechatronics can be studied at the Buchs or St. Gallen campus—without needing to switch locations.
  • Excellent Industry Network: OST maintains close ties with industries in the Rhine Valley and the St.Gallen area, offering students outstanding job prospects.
  • Outstanding Student Support: Benefit from small class sizes and peer tutoring. Faculty members are on-site and approachable, ready to assist with your questions.

Specializations

After completing the first year of foundational studies, you’ll decide on your area of specialization. Starting in the third semester, you’ll focus on one of three specializations, becoming a specialist with interdisciplinary training and expertise in your chosen field.

Mechanical Engineering and Product Development

Dive into the exciting world of mechanical engineering. You’ll learn the practical development process from ideation and concept creation to the final product. Using advanced simulation tools and digital twins, you’ll design sophisticated technical solutions. With this expertise, you’ll tackle modern challenges and actively shape the products of tomorrow.

Electronic Engineering and Embedded Systems

In every innovative product, embedded electronics play a critical role—measuring, controlling, regulating, communicating, and making decisions. In this specialization, you’ll learn to design, develop, and program complex, software-driven electronic systems. You’ll explore signal amplification, filtering, conversion, and processing with algorithms, and gain insights into electrical energy transformation.

Data Engineering and Industrial AI

The modern production world generates massive amounts of data. Learn how to leverage this data to optimize products and processes using machine learning and artificial intelligence. From data collection and databases to the Internet of Things, modeling, analysis, and visualization, you’ll explore intelligent decision-making systems. Discover how data is utilized in engineering and industry to drive efficiency and innovation.
