In an earlier project (VinyAcid), it was found that the dosed addition of PVC sorting residues in MSW incineration plants not only produces more acid but also shifts heavy metals from the slag to the filter ash. This enables heavy metals to be recovered from the filter ash.
In cooperation with waste incineration plants and landfill operators, field tests are being carried out on the ‘artificial’ carbonation of MSWI slag. This achieves a chemically inert state (‘earth crust quality’) of the slag, so that heavy metal emissions discharged with the landfill leachate are reduced or prevented in the long term.
